Hello friends!

Think back to the last time you tried something for the very first time. Maybe you tried to bake a cake, paint a picture, or play a new game. How did it go? If you are like most of us, you were probably not very good at it. Your cake might have been flat, or your painting might have looked like a big, colourful mess.

And that is perfectly okay.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has a newsletter.

Yeah. That Arnold Schwarzenegger.

So do Codie Sanchez, Scott Galloway, Colin & Samir, Shaan Puri, and Jay Shetty. And none of them are doing it for fun. They're doing it because a list you own compounds in ways that social media never will.

Today, we live in a world where everyone wants to look like an expert. We see people on the internet who look perfect. They cook amazing meals and run very fast. Because of this, we feel like if we aren't "the best" right away, we should just quit.

But I want to tell you why being bad at something is actually a very good thing.

1. Everyone Starts at Zero

No one is born knowing how to play the guitar or knit a sweater. Every expert you see was once a beginner who didn't know what they were doing.

  • Being "bad" is just Step 1. It is the gate you have to walk through to get to Step 2.

  • If you are afraid to be bad, you will never get the chance to be good.

2. It Gives Your Brain a Workout

When you do something you are already good at, your brain is on "autopilot." It doesn't have to work very hard.

But when you try something new—and you struggle with it—your brain is actually growing! It is making new connections as you try to figure out how to hold the brush or move your feet. Being bad at a hobby is like taking your brain to the gym.

3. Hobbies are for Fun, Not for Work

A hobby is not a job. You don't have to make money from it, and you don't have to get a promotion.

  • The goal is joy.

  • You can be a "bad" singer and still love singing in the shower.

  • You can be a "bad" gardener and still love the smell of the dirt.

If you only do things you are good at, your world becomes very small. When you permit yourself to be bad, you open the door to a lot more fun.

How to Enjoy Being a Beginner

If you feel nervous about starting something new, try these three simple tips:

  • Laugh at your mistakes: If your "handmade" bowl looks like a lumpy rock, laugh! It’s just a hobby.

  • Don't show the internet: You don't have to post your first try on social media. Keep your "messy" stuff for yourself.

  • Focus on the feeling: Ask yourself, "Am I enjoying this?" If the answer is yes, then you are winning, no matter how the result looks.

Summary: The Power of Trying

Why We Are Afraid

The Truth

"I look silly."

Everyone looks silly when they learn.

"I'm wasting time."

Learning something new is never a waste.

"I'll never be an expert."

You don't have to be an expert to have fun.

Your Challenge for Today: Go do something you are "bad" at. Sing a song, draw a cat, or try a new dance. Do it badly, do it with a smile, and remember: the goal is the try, not the trophy.

Until next time, keep being a happy beginner!
